For many people who haven’t meditated they often feel it’s unattainable — a state of altered being that they can’t possibly reach.
Contrary to this belief, meditation doesn’t take you to another place. Meditation is about sharpening your focus exactly where you are.
In Yoga Journal’s article “Meditation for Everybody,” the author, Frank Jude Boccio, talks about the benefits of meditation, both mental and physical. In addition to reducing stress, sharpening our minds, and bringing joy, research shows that meditation decreases oxygen consumption, heart rate, respiratory rate, and blood pressure and increases alpha, theta, and delta brain waves—the opposite of the physiological changes during a stress response.
He offers insight to beginners about meditation along with sample basic practices to get you started. Here are some of the methods he suggests beginners try:
1. Conscious Breathing
2. Mantra Recitration
3. Visualization
4. Loving Kindness Meditation
5. Vipassana
6. Vedantic Meditation
7. Moving Meditation
