Hide Oshiro is an artist who moved to Newburgh, NY 12 years ago. He draws and paints while his wife Catherine volunteers in the community. Born in Tokyo one hundred years ago, he wanted to come to the United States when he first saw the word “Liberty” on an American coin. When asked about the gang violence in Newburgh, he said young people need to learn that the breath of life is all that matters.
At it’s core the breath of life is just that, simply breathing in and out. One way you can learn to control this energy and maximize its benefits is through yoga. When students first come to yoga they learn about asanas—postures. They eventually learn the key to holding these postures— pranayama—breathing. If they stay with their practice, they experience the many benefits of pranayama. You can learn how with Yoga Journal’s “Breathing Lessons.”
